SCOBY Progress
As of this week my SCOBY has been forming for two weeks. It is a bit clumpy so far but is beginning to form a good layer (WARNING, it looks kind of gross). It appears to be a healthy SCOBY and smells similar to apple cider vinegar at this point. I think it will need a few more weeks to form more thickly before I will be able to make the first batch of kombucha. I did learn this week that it is important for the SCOBY to have airflow, because I am keeping it in a cabinet I have been opening the cabinet door a few times a day to allow it fresh oxygen.
My meaningful occupations enrich my spirituality, especially the many occupations I enjoy outdoors and the occupations that allow me to be creative. Being outside has always been an important way for me to enrich and connect with my spirituality. My new occupation of brewing kombucha has been a new process so far, I think learning new things can enrich spirituality so in that sense it has already begun to have an impact. In the future when it becomes something I better at it could enrich my spirituality by being able to use creativity to make something healthy.
I think the inclusion of spirituality in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (OTPF) is important. Spirituality is defined as “A deep experience of meaning brought about by engaging in occupations ... It is important to view spirituality as dynamic and often evolving. (Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process- Fourth Edition, 2020)” This definition shows how important spirituality is to individuals when they engage in occupations. I think spirituality can be integral in rehabilitation, not recognizing its impact could impede recovery. Also included in the definition is how dynamic spirituality is, this could be very important as people could be experiencing changes in their spirituality especially if they have recently experienced a big life change such as a disability. Spirituality is included in the OTPF in a few different places including as a client factor, an influence on clients’ motivation to participate in occupation, and as an environmental factor (Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process- Fourth Edition, 2020). I think these are all important ways spirituality is present in occupational therapy and in people’s lives.

This was so interesting to read! I look forward to your future posts and the progress of your kombucha. I appreciate that you recognized that trying new things can impact your spirituality. The simple act of trying new occupations can bring about additional meaning to someone who values stretching out their comfort zone. It's pretty cool to think about the extent of personal fulfillment an occupation can invite when it lines up with someone's values and beliefs. I appreciated when we talked about different values in class and what occupations can reflect them. It could be something as simple as driving your car or playing a musical instrument. I personally love spending time outside with my family or playing the piano.
ReplyDeleteHey Sarah! I totally agree about spending time outside with loved ones and that is great you play the piano. I have always thought music and playing music to be very spiritual and a valuable occupation and have always wanted to be able to play an instrument well. I also like how you talked about the impact of being outside your comfort zone.
