Blog post 12

I will continue brewing kombucha after the semester is over, I am just getting started and there are so many possibilities with making kombucha I still want to explore. I have benefitted from my new occupation, it has saved money, acted as a healthy addition to my diet, and even became a creative outlet. While brewing kombucha is a small task, it made me realize how even seemingly small occupations can be stressful and difficult to learn/ adjust to. I have been brewing kombucha since the start of the semester and I still find myself googling things constantly like "is it normal for a SCOBY to have an air bubble" or "Is it normal for a SCOBY to stick up out of the kombucha”. I have learned new occupations before as an adult and it is usually a humbling process. Learning new things allows me to reflect on the process and the stress of learning or relearning an occupation, as well as the rewards a future client might face.

The article we read about the flow state was interesting to me, I enjoyed learning about the flow state and how meaningful occupations can bring a person to this state. I also really enjoyed the documentary The Crash Reel about Kevin Pearce. I felt like I really connected to this story because I am very involved in snow sports, and I know many people who have been injured or even killed from accidents in the mountains. It was really moving to see how his life changed and to see his journey in coming to terms with these changes and moving forward with his life. It really demonstrated how meaningful occupations are variable and can change throughout life and with different experiences.

I would recommend to future MOT students to choose a new occupation they are really interested in doing that will not take an excessive amount of time. I was glad I chose brewing kombucha because it requires a lot of waiting and is a small time commitment each week. This allowed me to enjoy my new occupation more because it was not causing a lot of stress by taking up my limited free time. I also liked picking an occupation I could benefit from beyond just learning a new skill. I enjoyed this assignment and appreciated the opportunity to learn something new!

  1. Hi Maddie!

I have really enjoyed reading your Kombucha stories and progress throughout the semester. It is crazy that the semester is almost over! I think it is great that you plan to continue the Booch Please journey. I am looking forward to your Kombucha show and tell in a couple weeks! I am not sure I plan to do the same with my new occupation, but I am happy that I have the knowledge (and some experience) with knitting that I did not previously possess. I that did not mention the article discussing Flow, but it was one of my favorites as well. It has really stuck with me throughout the semester. There were many articles and topics to choose from. I have found myself wishing I would have mentioned more articles after reading this week's blog posts. I also mentioned the Crash Reel documentary in my blog post. I find myself frequently thinking about the story and its impact on every viewer. I also mentioned the States of Grace documentary. The documentaries shown in class have impacted my thought processes. They continued to heighten my excitement for a career as an OTR. I think the advice for future students that you mentioned is very important. In hindsight, I wish I would have picked an occupation that required less devoted time. I found myself frequently placing knitting on the back burner throughout the semester, which I regret. Great thoughts, great brewing! Do you have any plans for new ingredients or recipes that you may implement in your brewing process in the future? I do not know much about kombucha, but I would guess there are endless options. :)

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hannah, I am excited to hopefully bring some kombucha to share with everyone for show and tell. I agree about the documentaries, I found them to both be impactful. You are right about the opportunities for new ingredients in kombucha being endless! I recently made mango kombucha and want to try making mojito flavored kombucha next. I have noticed the flavors including ginger are my favorite so I will probably start including ginger in more batches as well! Cheers!
